Novellen begynder som en beretning om en mand, der tager sin søn til et øde sted, hvorfra han selv husker at have haft gode oplevelser med sin egen far. Manden er blevet skilt fra barnets mor, men ønsker at bevare et godt og venskabeligt forhold til sin søn. Han bærer deres rygsække over en lav, men hurtigt strømmende flod og går så tilbage og bærer drengen over. De tilbringer den næste morgen med at udforske området. Senere på dagen dag, da de går over floden igen, er manden godt klar over, at strømmen nu er endnu stærkere end dagen før. Idet han bærer drengen over floden, mister han fodfæstet, og selv om han ikke ryger under, bliver de alligevel taget med et stykke ned ad floden til et sted, hvor det synes umuligt at komme hverken frem eller tilbage. Novellen slutter med, at manden, der står midt i floden indser, at der ingen vej ud er. Alligevel fortæller han sin søn, at de er ok, og at han bare skal holde fast.

He wears their backpacks over a low but fast-flowing river and then goes back and carries the boy over. They spend the next morning to explore the area. Later in the day day when they go over the river again, man is well aware that the flow is now even stronger than the day before. Because he carries the boy across the River, he loses a foothold, and although he is not smoking, they are nevertheless taken with a piece of down the River to a place where it seems impossible to get either forward or backward. The short story ends with the man who stands in the middle of the river realizes that there is no way out. Yet he tells his son that they are ok, and that he simply must adhere to.
