Clockwork Orange foregår i fremtidens London, der har fået et dystopisk udseende i årenes løb.
Sproget har for de yngre generationers vedkommende ændret sig til nadsat, der betyder teenager.
Nadsat er en blanding af russisk, engelsk og amerikansk slang. Alexander De Large, vores
hovedperson, er en ungdomsforbryder, der slår, dræber og voldtager folk. Han bliver så omsider
fanget, og stillet til ansvar for sine forbryderiske handlinger. Alex har ofte været i politiets varetægt,
hvor han er blevet straffet mildere med forskellige ophold på børnehjem og opdragelsesanstalter.
Men denne gang er der ingen kære mor, han kommer bag lås og slå. Alligevel efter 2 års
fængselsophold, melder der sig en udvej for Alex. Udvejen, som han selvfølgelig tager chancen og
snupper, er et ophold på et forsøgscenter, der forsker i Ludovico Teknikken (efter Ludwig Van
Beethoven, Ludovico er Ludwig på italiensk). Det er en teknik der gør brug af tidens viden om
hjernevask samt kemisk behandling, teknikken har til hensigt at vende patientens morderiske
aggressioner til noget godt. Patienten mister evnen til at have sin frie vilje, og vil få følelsen af
kvalme, bare tanken om vold melder sig. Det ses tydeligt da Ludovico Teknikken vises frem, idet
han bliver udsat for forskellige tests og prøver. Her er han først blevet irriteret og sparket: ``»…og
hvis du vil gøre noget ved det, begynd så, begynd så, endelig.« Nu vidste jeg, at jeg måtte være
rigtig skårrig og få min snittebritva frem, før den frygtelige dræbende sygdom kom hvislende op og
gjorde kampglæden til en følelse af at skulle pikke af.´´ (1) Men den skrækkelige følelse kommer,
og han falder om. I det sidste handlingsforløb, møder Alex fortidens synder. Bland andet i form af
hans venner, ofre og sine forældre.
