'Niceville' foregår i Mississippi, USA. Året er 1962 og den nye racelov netop er blevet indført.

Adskillelsen mellem hvide og sorte er pludselig ikke længere lovlig. Ku Klux Klan hærger, og sorte lever i skræk og rædsel.

Så meget desto mere fantastisk - og modigt - er det da også, da Aibileen, en sort tjenestepige, indvilger i at fortælle sin historie til miss Skeeter.

Skeeter er en ung hvid kvinde, der aldrig har forstået, hvorfor hendes egen elskede ’mammy’ forsvandt ud af hendes liv, og som har sat sig for at beskrive tilværelsen of en række sorte tjenestepiger.
