Fortælleren ved, hvad faderen tænker, føler og erindrer, og det er hans synsvinkel vi får på tingene. Vi får altså som læsere adgang til hovedper- sonens indre tanke og følelsesliv:
“Where had it come from – this slide into weakness, this vision of death...” (l.68-69)
“You never see it, he thought.” (l.117)
Der er tale om en begrænset fortæller (limited narrator), i det vi ikke har adgang til fx drengens følelser og tanker.
